Everyone needs some comfort now and then, whether going through a major crisis, suffering a minor setback, or just having a bad day. Although most of us have people that we depend on to help us with our problems, sometimes they’re too busy or overwhelmed with their own problems to help us with ours. In such cases, the next best thing for many of us is to get our favorite quilts and literally wrap ourselves in comfort. It’s no wonder that quilts are referred to as comforters, or that there is such a term as security blanket. Steeped in a tradition that is much older than this country, quilts, which are as colorful and enchanting as their history, have been soothing jangled nerves for generations. Customarily made as gifts, from bits and pieces of worn-out clothing, linens, and other materials of significance to the recipient, quilts typically have indescribable sentimental value as well. In pioneer days, families braving the harsh, hostile westward trails in search of new land and new lives had to gather ample supplies in preparation for their journeys. These provisions were necessary not only for safe passage, but for long-term survival at their new destinations. Along with several months’ worth of food, ammunition, and clothing, it was advised that every family have enough bedding to last for a few years, with two or three quilts or blankets for each person. In many cases, that included quilts that were sewn by friends of the woman of the departing family as remembrances of people and places that she would probably never see again. Along the trail, quilts were used for many purposes other than bedding. Friendship and heirloom quilts were often packed in trunks or used to wrap fine china and other fragile items, while everyday quilts were folded and used as cushioning against the hard, uncomfortable wagon seats. When the prairie winds raged in blinding blizzards of dust and dirt, quilts were hung across openings and stuffed into cracks, to keep it out of the wagons. Indeed, the beloved quilt has been bringing warmth, coziness, and comfort to the human race for centuries. Its outstanding and legendary service has earned it a place of prominence in folklore. At the same time, its stunning, intricately woven designs, rich with color and symbolism, have elevated it to the status of artwork, which is why it is often displayed on a rack. No less noble than those which traversed endless miles over perilous plains with the pioneers, your quilt also merits a position of distinction in your home. Rather than relegating it to the bedroom, exhibit it with the honor it deserves on a quilt rack.
