Writing content for websites can turn out to be quite easy if you indeed know how to go about it. Of course, writing for websites is not the same as writing for newspapers. First and foremost, you are catering to a different kind of reader. Therefore, there must be some basic differences in your writing approach also. We have summarized some important strategies to write articles in case you are a novice. The intention is not only to draft your article, but also to have it read by a large number of people. Only then can you call yourself a successful article writer for websites.

(1) Select a popular topic to write on – Your first attempt at writing a successful article should be the selection of the topic itself. You can use a tool like Overture to find out the popular topics being currently searched by people. This tool will tell you how many times a particular keyword has been searched for in the past few days. If you are writing for someone else, then they will provide you with a list of keywords to write on. So, you are saved the job of searching for a popular topic to write on.

(2) Do the preliminary research – Research is important when you are writing an online article. Use a good search engine like Google and type the keyword in. Read some already written articles on the net. This will also give you an idea of the ground other writers have already covered. Use free online encyclopedias like wikipedia.org and answers.com to get information. Read only the points that are relevant for the article you are writing.

(3) Prepare the first draft – When you get the points you need to include in your article, begin writing. Be sure to tackle one point at a time. In your mind, be precise about how you would like to divide the paragraphs. All writers have different styles of writing they are comfortable with. But for beginners, here is a very effective way to write: When you have an idea in mind, keep typing in continuously, and do not stop until you have finished what you want to say. Do not even pause to make corrections of spelling and grammar. The editing can happen later. When you have put in the freely flowing thoughts into the article, you will be amazed to see how much the word count has built up.

(4) Sequence your paragraphs – When writing the article, it is not always that you will get all the ideas in the correct order. You might find something later on that you think must go first in the article. Do not worry about this. The word processors that we use have all the cut-paste features we need to sequence paragraphs. When writing, do not worry about the sequence. Write all your different ideas in different paragraphs first. Then cut-paste the paragraphs to the locations that you think suit them best. When done, read the whole article to see that the sequence does not seem illogical or jarring to the reader.

(5) Edit your article – You may be the best of writers, but there are always inadvertent mistakes that can happen when writing. Therefore, whether you are an amateur or a pro, you must reread your article before sending it. When you are reading, the first thing you must check is for spelling and grammar. But there are other things you must look out for also. See if your article contains any confusing sentence. If yes, then change it with something easier to understand. Internet readers do not have patience to read difficult language. So keep your language simple. If you are catering to a particular country, then use their kind of language if possible. There are different kinds of English spoken in the US, Europe, India and Australia. Write in that language.

These are the basic things that a beginner needs to know when writing content for websites. But there are some more things that should be borne in mind when writing.

(1) Be sure to use the keyword adequately in the article. You must use the keyword once for every hundred words you write.

(2) Adhere to the word count that has been specified to you. There is no point crossing the limit, as the article might become too taxing to read.

(3) Do not write anything sensitive or controversial in your article. Write only when you are sure about the facts.

(4) Do not copy anything from other websites. You can use information, but you must use original language. Plagiarism is a serious offence in content writing, and it will disqualify you for any further content-writing jobs.
