With the rise in environmental awareness, it has become obvious that there is more we can do to create a sustainable society. If everyone in the world would take just a few small steps, make a few different choices, and think about their impact on the world, there might be a way to restore the world to its original beauty and resources. Let’s look at a few different places where these steps can be taken – you may just find that you too can save the world.
Your home is where you spend a majority of your time, so it seems safe to say that steps taken there will do the most good (or harm) for the environment. Thankfully, many of the changes that you can make are simple and will not affect your day to day living.
• Use more efficient light bulbs – Many of these newly designed halogen light bulbs can last up to ten years in a regular lamp or light fixture, allowing you to consume fewer light bulbs as the bulb also uses less energy. Reduced energy costs are another benefit to you.
• Lessen the water that you waste – By placing a bag of rocks into your toilet’s tank, you will change the level of displacement that you have with each flush. Over the course of a year, this adds up to thousands of gallons of water saved.
• Recycle – The world has so many more recycling programs now that can be easy accessed from your home. You may need to purchase recycling bins, but that’s a small cost to reduce the waste that ends up in landfills.
In the workplace, you can follow many of the same steps that you did at home. But you will also want to think of following some of these:
• Try bringing your own coffee cup – The use of Styrofoam is still rampant in the office setting. Instead of throwing out this un-biodegradable cup, why not bring your own and reuse it throughout the week?
• Consider better buildings – Metal buildings and steel buildings can both be recyclable ways to increase storage space and increase your overall business location. These metal buildings and steel buildings can come preassembled or be easily assembled in hours, rather than days.
• Recycle your paper waste – Many times, offices will produce more waste in paper than they do in any other area of their day to day tasks. Try to recycle these papers as much as possible or look into virtual methods of storing documentation – you can always scan in images from your computer screen to save on disks or hard drives, instead of having to print them.
When you’re on the road and traveling, you can also save the environment. Simply make sure to keep little off of the road and recycle any plastics or aluminum cans that you might use. You can also try to drive to various areas instead of flying, as this reduces your overall environmental impact.
