No doubt keeping your pond looking clean and beautiful is a priority, and one important thing you can do to keep it looking great is to add a filter to your pond. While pond filters are very effective and can keep your pond look and smelling great, there are some natural things you can do to your pond that will help your filter in keeping your pond clean. Why not let nature take over and do some of the hard work for you and your filter to keep your pond at its best.

Add Water Lilies - One thing that you can do to help keep your pond looking great without putting all the pressure on your pond filters is to add water lilies to your pond. Although water lilies are well known for being so amazingly beautiful, believe it or not, they also are great for keeping your pond clean as well. Water lilies will easily spread out across your pond, and if you keep at least half of your pond covered with water lilies, or another similar plant, it can help to get rid of that funky green water that is such an eyesore.

Add Other Water Plants to The Mix
Another good idea to help your filter is to use other water plants in your pond. These plants will also help your pond filters, and add beauty to your water garden at the same time. Many water plants have the natural ability to help filter the waste that occurs naturally, and those from your fish. These water plants will also help to make your pond smell better by helping to get rid of organic waste that may be adding to the green color of your pond. Use both submerged and floating plants to achieve the best effects for your ponds.

Add A Waterfall - Adding a waterfall will not only make it look amazing, but it helps your pond filters in keeping your pond clean. Its important to ensure that your pond doesn't become stagnant, and a waterfall is a breathtaking way of ensuring this. By moving the water around, it increases the amount of oxygen in the pond as well as moving other materials within your pond. Promoting the beneficial bacteria is key to keeping your pond at its best.

You may want to consider pond salt which assists in fish health by discouraging parasites and helping the fish maintain their shiny coat.

No single method will ensure that your garden pond maintains the healthy balance. However, in addition to the appropriate filter for the size of your pond, you should add a bit of mother nature to your pond. Remember, your filter has to work hard to ensure your pond remains clean. This will eventually wear out the filters motor. So, do yourself, and your pond a favor, add some beauty to your pond in the way of water lilies and barley to your pond to act as natural filtration which will make it easier on your filter. Adding a waterfall will help to keep the water moving, which decreases the likelihood of natural diseases resulting from stagnant water. Besides, they look great!
