Almost everyone knows the story of Dorothy on her way to Oz, Luke Skywalker who battles the Dark Side or Odysseus on his life quest. Is the pursuing of dreams and fighting of battles only for the heroes of fiction? Clearly, the answer to that is no. We are all on a journey: an epic to discover our way home and become a hero in our own right. Our monsters may not be flying monkeys or one-eyed Cyclops, but they are just as formidable. When we learn to listen to the song within, it slays the monsters; it guides us to the truth, to our purpose and helps to defeat what standsbetween us and our destiny.

Doubts, self-criticism and fear drown out the song within. These negative and destructive forces were not parceled out at birth but something thrust upon us by well-meaning but misguided people. Why not learn to trust the truth and replace this meaningless noise with a melody that comes from the heart. How is this possible? How do I turn down the static and turn up the volume to hear my music, sing my song?

We do this by first learning to trust the goodness within ourselves and then see the same goodness within others. This goodness, however, is not self-serving. When we realize that our purpose is to serve, then we not only find what was missing in ourselves but also live a life that is rich in all sense of the word. Believing that goodness is inherent sounds so simple, but sometimes the simplest things require the greatest effort to change.

This universe revolves on change, and as part of this universe we change as well, whether we choose to or not. When we make a conscious choice to purposefully grow into our greatest self, we come closer to the true essence of who and what we are. Growth and metamorphosis, however, are not always comfortable. Familiarity may be assuring, but like the adage, familiarity may also breed contempt. Feelings of dissatisfaction and discomfort are the first signs that conscious change is in order. Reflect on these feelings and release the emotions and patterns that keep you from your true nature. When this is accomplished, you can replace the doubts and self-criticism with acceptance and unconditional love. This is the beginning of a cycle that enriches your life and all those you come in contact with. So far, I have lived a life of service as a teacher. It is only since I’ve become an entrepreneur that I’ve come to appreciate the full meaning of serving others by discovering my true self.

You are already on this journey of self-discovery by listening to the call of BraveHeart. This is something that resonates within you, something that speaks to your hidden dreams and muted destiny. Some of you will answer this call; others will choose to
listen to the Siren’s song. If you decide to trust what you feel, then realize you are not alone on this journey. Walking along beside you will be others who have more heart than the Tin Man, more courage than the Lion and more wisdom than the Man of Straw. Begin this journey, and like Homer’s mythical hero, find true happiness. This is a journey of a lifetime; make it one for the books.
