The vital thing to remember about teen weight loss is to implement much healthier eating habits. Today, teen obesity is a growing problem, and there is plenty you can do as a parent in order to help your teen with any weight problems he or she may have.

Although there is no silver bullet to helping your teen lose weight, the real key to achieving success is by helping them to develop a healthier lifestyle that they can then carry on into adulthood. Below are a few tips that parents can use when dealing with their overweight teens.

1. Resist using quick fixes in order to achieve rapid weight loss.

Help your teenager by showing them how to lose weight, and keep it off. Many fad diets out there are likely to cheat your teenager of vital nutrients, iron and calcium that they need in their diet, as they are still growing. Don’t allow your teen to take diet pills or perform other quick solutions, as they will not treat the root of the problem, and the effects of these types of treatments are short lived. It is important to remember that only lasting changes in their lifestyle will keep the weight off for good.

2. Increase the amount of physical activity your child does. Just like any adult, a teen will need to do about 60 minutes of physical activity every day. But this does not mean that they have to do it all at one time. Instead, they can do the activity in short bursts during the day enabling them to burn off any excess calories. Team sports, which they do at school or at a local gym, is an incredible way for your teen to get active. If your child isn’t an athlete, or finds it exhausting to participate in specific activities, then encourage them to walk, cycle or skate to school and back, or just to walk a few times around the school before classes begin. Why not suggest that they spend at least one of each day away from the computer and do something a little more physical (may be you can get them to take the dog for a walk)? Try and get them to do household chores, like mowing or washing the car, as they have aerobic benefits as well.

3. Ensure your teen has a healthy breakfast. If you have a teenager who finds that it’s too difficult to wake up, try to wake them up a a bit earlier than normal in order for them to eat breakfast. How many times have you heard people say “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”? A nutritious breakfast will give them energy, boost their metabolism, and will give them with the energy they need to make it through the day. Also, you may discover that it may stop them from eating too much during the rest of the day as well.

If your teen is not crazy about high fiber cereal or whole wheat toast, then encourage them to eat leftovers. You could even recommend a piece of cheese, a small handful of nuts and a piece of fruit instead, this will be just as good for them as the toast and cereal.
