Colon cleansing as a process has been in existence for thousands of years, the Egyptians were one of the first civilizations to use colon hydrotherapy to treat constipation. Similarly the Greeks too used Clysters to cure constipation, and finally Clyster syringes were used as a known medical device for constipation. However with passage of time colon cleansing has bifurcated into both a medical and naturopathic treatment. Colon cleansing when carried out medically is termed as an Enema, and colon hydrotherapy (a much larger enema) is prescribed and used by naturopathic practitioners.
Today based on the symptoms prescribed enemas have become common place. An enema involves using various fluids to gently irrigate the colon and get rid of any faecal blockages or chronic faecal matter. As for naturopathic colon cleansing (colon hydrotherapy) the benefits are detoxification of the body and especially the intestines.
Enemas
The most popular use of an enema is as a bowel stimulant and an enema has similar effects as laxatives. Although laxatives are purely oral, Enemas are considered a more invasive form of treatment and are recommended in cases of severe constipation. In addition enemas are also recommended to patients that are suffering from faecal impaction. In both cases enemas have shown to be considerably useful. The fluid used for colon cleansing is usually a mixture of water (mechanical stimulant), Sodium Bicarbonate and soap (Cleansing agent), and Sodium Phosphate. Sodium Phosphate is particularly useful as it actually stimulates the colon and increases water circulation to the colon. In fact most home use enemas usually have Sodium Phosphate as a key ingredient.
Enemas are also used prior to surgical procedures to clean the colon. In cases where the primary objective is colon cleansing a baking soda and soap solution is used. Also in cases of faecal impaction where colon cleansing is necessary Sodium Bicarbonate is the additive of choice.
Colon Hydrotherapy
Colon hydrotherapy is a larger version of an enema and is designed to use natural ingredients like diluted coffee and tea tree extracts instead of Sodium Phosphate. In contrast to enemas, colon hydrotherapy covers a much wider area and is generally considered one of the most effective ways of carrying out colon cleansing.
Also known as colonic irrigation, colon hydrotherapy cleans the entire colon. Naturopathic practitioners strongly recommend colon hydrotherapy for cleansing of the colon, improving bowel movement and to reduce the impacts of autointoxication. There might be no scientific study that can conclusively state that colon hydrotherapy is an effective means of carry out colon cleansing, but the truth is that a lot of people have shown considerable improvement after colon hydrotherapy.
Depending on the nature of the diagnosis colon hydrotherapy and enemas are currently the most effective ways to carry out colon cleansing. The only thing to remember in both cases is that one should ensure that the equipment used is certified by the medical council, and that sanitary conditions are up to the mark. In fact the only criticism of colon hydrotherapy over the years has been the negative effects it has had on patients when the sanitary conditions have not been up to the mark.
