It's one of the most common problems experienced by stress, depression and anxiety sufferers alike. That overwhelming feeling that no matter what you do, no matter how hard you try, things will never change. This terrible feeling is the high-octane fuel boosting stress, depression and anxiety, deepening the torment making it so very hard to see light at the end of the tunnel.
Let's look at how this can happen and then we'll see how to overcome this feeling.
Your home life is going badly wrong. Your spouse has left you for whatever reason and it's an acrimonious split. Pressure at work is building, you're working more hours under tight deadlines for the same pay. And the split has left your finances in a mess and each month, you go deeper and deeper into crippling debt. You are under severe stress and struggling to cope.
Sounds familiar, yes? I've been there too and my word is it a terrible state to be in. You can't talk to anyone, you try to make things better by yourself and they just get worse and you wake up with the night demons at 3 am. every morning and you start to think highly-emotional thoughts such as:
"What's the point of trying? I'm ruined, my life is falling apart and no matter what I do things NEVER change. I just can't work this out, and life will always be like this."
My word, such thoughts are extremely harmful but what's important to understand is that such thoughts are seriously flawed. Two words do most of the damage here, they are ALWAYS and NEVER. IF you tell yourself that things will NEVER improve and that you'll ALWAYS be unhappy, you make life very hard and you make it very difficult to find answers to the situation you are in. You're believing the storm you're caught up in will never pass.
But no storm ever lasts forever and no matter how violent a storm is, it will pass. Indeed, nothing on this beautiful planet of ours ever lasts forever. In life, change is inevitable and sometimes the changes are good, sometimes not so good but change comes. This applies to your bad times too and the key is to understand this and to avoid using highly emotional words such as never and always.
The problem is that during episodes of stress, depression and anxiety, it is very hard to accept that it is only a temporary phase in your life. This is because finding answers to problems at such times isn't as straightforward as it usually is. But it is vital to be aware that there are always answers and solutions to problems. OK sometimes you may not like the way things turn out but it will be an answer and you can move on to a new chapter in your life. Change will continually happen throughout your life, just as it has constantly happened right to this point. Your happiness lies in your ability to deal with change, good or bad and realizing that nothing lasts forever will help to deal with change.
Before I end this article, I want to remind you of something very powerful. You possess the power to introduce change into your life whenever you want. Everybody has this power and they usually exercise it during the better times in life, a new job or a new relationship would be good examples. But you also possess this power when you're under stress, depression or anxiety. You can still effect change at such times, that power remains yours and you can choose to use it should you wish.
If you're caught up in a mind-storm of stress, depression and anxiety, it is so important to realize that no matter how bad things are right now, the storm will pass. Change is inevitable, it is a fact of life and you can help the storm blow itself out by using your power to create changes and relieve stress - quickly. You have this power and you can choose how to use it.
